Gun Violence Poster 2 by depthskins Gun Violence Poster 2 by depthskins
This design is a poster concept for my Class project, "the effects of gun violence".

According to the brief we're suppose to communicate the effects of gun violence in society (toronto).

It has to be able to stand alone (without type) and communicate its message.

I'm hoping this one is more sucessful that the previous one. The idea is to communicate that gun violence can break a city down you know. Think of it, killling of the innocent whether it be youth, business people, etc it affects the economy of any city.

So, the hands and guns up top depicts a rise in gun violence in Toronto. The blood running down should communicate:
1. breaking down of the city.
2. innocent people dying.

The sillhouttes reinforce that idea of people dying.

EDITS
Ok, so I've edited this a bit.
1. I changed the typography made it apart of the design like @shutdown suggested.

2. I added a background texture like `duhcoolies suggested in hopes to get more of that violent emotion.

EDITS
1. Try to add some depth by giving the hands some shadows.

2. Added bullet holes which makes it seem more violent.

3. Added lighting behind the CN Tower silhoutte to highlight it because people seem to miss the fact that the cityscape is Toronto.

3. The type was aligned better in perfect angle with the gun.

Freaking powerful. I love it.

The way how you used your copy to act as the bullet was a very nice touch.

The only thing that bothers me are the bullet holes. I would love to see it without those.

If I turned this in to my teacher in my ad design course, I would get an A+! I love the simplicity, being that it is a two color design. It speaks so clearly and powerfully. Nice use of negative space throughout the design. Awesome design!

The first one was really great but I think this one hits the message home much harder. I get a real sense of community, and how it's in danger from this one.

is there any way to impose the "blood" on the textured portion and have it starting to drip onto the skyline?

having the "blood" soley on the skyline takes away from it. i wasn't really aware it was a skyline til i read your description.

my 2 cents :)

no, I don't wanna do that. The idea is that the blood is running down the skyline as if it's tearing the city down. Yes, I'm aware it doesn't look like skyline at first but it works.

compared to the other one this is definitely better at carrying the message  but i think it still needs a bit of work... to me it doesnt look intense enough to show about violence

hmmm.... more blood...show more pain...? Kinda hard to incorporate. Dunno out more blood cuz the entire thing is already red and black so it's suggesting lots of blood and pain.

Emotional...I could tinker with.

Mmm, this one is definitley better than the last, and does portray the concept well.

However, the silhouettes that you added at the bottom, instead of reinforcing the fact that people are dying because of guns, it seems as if you're saying "cities are being destroyed by people using guns", not a bad thing since it is a poster against gun violence. But then again, it kinda reminds me of a movie poster where having guns are "cool", know what i mean? :)

I hope you know a really good printing store, i'm not sure how clear it'll be when you print it out.

And one last thing, you'll prolly hate me for this, but duuude, if you're going to use words, try to combine them with the image itself! I know this isn't a typography project, but in any design typo work and the imagery should have some form of connection, for me the scattered words in the back feels out of place. they seem to do nothing for the image, and personally i hate that font's look. (arial? i might be wrong)

only hate you for thinking I use arial in such project :P :lmao: arial...lol.

The silhouttes part...hmm, not sure how u see it as cool using guns. I mean blood is kinda like raining on the people because of gun violence...not cool, imo.

I'll work with the type, now that you suggested that, I'm gonna work with another idea I have. I'll update you.

Thanks for the comment, very very useful.
Oh, I'll do a proof print today.

Muuuuuuuuch better. The texture work is just hot! Getting rid of the text in the background, and using texture instead was an awesome move to fill up the space with something that emphasizes your concept and it also gives a lot more focus on the text in the middle.

I think the pose of the silhouettes are what's getting to me, they don't look like they're suffering, instead they're pose is more confident, instead of looking like normal people in a city, they look more as if they are in control of the city. This is what it kinda reminds me of: [link]

But it is a HUGE improvement :)

Cool. The pose of the silhouttes...good point. I'm hunting for some better on stock sites but nun good :(. Kinda hard to get that depressed pose.
Glad u like the texture.

I figured out why i sometimes dislike your typo, they sometimes reminds me of the font mcdonalds uses for their posters/logos, [link] probably looks very coimmon to other brands/products too.

well if it's fruitiger or helvetica, i'm guilty cuz that's the fonts i use the most. And they're basically among the best fonts out there. All depends on the work it's for.
